16th Street Kiosk Businesses Revitalization

16th Street New Kiosk. Photo by DDP.
The Downtown Denver Partnership (DDP) is working to revitalize 16th Street by bringing back small businesses to the kiosks along the mall.
Before the pandemic, there were 20 local businesses operating from these small structures. The 2020 shutdown and the street renovation that started in 2022 caused many to relocate or close permanently. Currently, nine businesses are running with two more getting ready to launch.
The useful part for potential entrepreneurs: DDP has grant funding available ranging from $3,000 for basic carts up to $12,500 for food service kiosks. According to Sarah Wiebenson from the economic development team, they still have both grants and lease opportunities available.
The concept helps small business owners get started with lower barriers to entry while bringing more shopping and dining options to the pedestrian mall. Some newer kiosk designs were created by University of Colorado Denver students, modern cube structures with slate and black metal finishes.
If you're thinking about starting a small business or know someone who is, this could be a solid opportunity to get started with some financial support in a high-traffic area.
Denver Reduces Unsheltered Homelessness
Denver has made real progress in reducing unsheltered homelessness, reporting a 45% drop from 1,423 individuals in 2023 to 785 in 2025, which the city claims is a national record.
But the full picture is more complicated. While fewer people are living on the streets, overall homelessness in Denver has actually increased from 5,818 people in 2023 to 7,347 in 2025. Many people have moved from tents into shelters, but thousands are still living in group shelters, some for years.
The data comes from the Point in Time count, which experts say has significant limitations since it's just a one-night snapshot. Cold weather during the count can skew results by driving people from camps into shelters.
Denver is moving faster than other cities like Houston and Dallas in reducing street homelessness, but the mayor's goal of moving people from shelters into permanent housing has been slower than expected. With potential federal funding cuts, permanent housing solutions could become even harder to achieve.
What's Happening
City Park Jazz

City Park Jazz is bringing live music to Denver with free jazz concerts at City Park from June 8 through August 3, 2025.
The series runs every Sunday from 6-8 PM at the pavilion. This week (June 15), ATOMGA is performing their afrobeat-jazz-funk fusion that gets people moving. Here is a YouTube video to give you a sample of their music. It’s great!
These guys have been performing together for 13 years, and here's a fun fact: there's actually a gold medal-winning beer named after them in Brazil that you can sometimes find at Banded Oak Brewing here in Denver.
As a community staple, these concerts provide a great gathering spot for residents to enjoy live music without spending money.
Bring a blanket or folding chair. It's one of those Denver traditions that's actually worth your time.

The tour celebrates his Grammy-nominated country album F-1 Trillion, so expect a mix of his biggest hits plus new country tracks. Parking permits are expected to sell out, but there's off-site parking at Auraria Campus, Ball Arena, Denver Aquarium and Riverside Church Denver.
If you're going, note the clear bag policy is in effect and tailgating is allowed beforehand.
